What's your "elevator pitch" to someone who is unfamiliar to the field of fire protection?
I realized my 2-3 sentences are a little dry and am looking for a new way to further excitement/interest in our field. Hopefully I get fewer glazed over expressions with your help! Sent in anonymously for discussion. Click Title to View | Submit Your Question | Subscribe

I typically talk about my fire department background as a career firefighter/medic, and how I parlayed that experience into fire protection engineering. Understanding the fire science and using that understanding to choose how to protect an given risk. A different approach to life safety.

As far as water damage goes, if this computer room gets hot enough to set off a sprinkler head you have a bigger issue than water.

That was my boss's favorite saying. His second favorite was, "The purest form of fire suppression is fire prevention".

I always talk about how interesting the work is, and that no two jobs are EVER the same. That you constantly work with different people from project to project, and that you are always learning. All said with much enthusiasm in my voice, as I do truly love my work!

I mention how relatively few people know how to design fire suppression systems and it's in high demand since nearly every building requires it. It can be a great way to stand out from the crowd if you're competent at it.

I'm rather on the cynical side and tell them that this field is just about recession proof...!

I say that fire protection was always near and dear to my heart as I was in the navy for many years and on a ship, you can’t stand in the front yard and watch the house burn down.
