I have never quite understood the difference between the maximum floor area per unit of A and the maximum floor area per extinguisher in NFPA 10 Table 6.2.1.1.
If you are only permitted 6,000 sqft for a 2A (3,000 x 2) how does the 11,250 sqft limitation come into play? Regardless, with a 75-ft travel distance maximum, you rarely get anywhere near these limits, but I wonder if anyone knows more. Thanks in advance! Sent in anonymously for discussion. Is a library vault filled with Class A banker boxes filled with paper on multiple shelves considered a deep seated fire hazard?

IBC (2021) Section 906 and IFC start with "where required". I cannot find where extinguishers are required for business occupancy. What is the code path to determine if fire extinguishers are required? Does the IBC/IFC not address where extinguishers are required? Sent in anonymously for discussion. The space to be protected is a testing chamber approximately 8 feet by 11 feet (made of combustible materials). Automatic fire extinguishers are not an option as they don't have any UL rating. I've seen plans recently that just have a 75-foot radius around an extinguisher proving coverage and wasn't sure if that's the proper way to measure travel distance for extinguishers. Posted anonymously for discussion. Discuss This | Submit Your Question | Subscribe |
