The minimum valve closure time of 5 seconds reduces the possibility of causing a “water hammer” in a system where water is flowing.

Water hammer in fire sprinkler system is negligible and of no importance since the system involves no fast open/close components such as valves unlike in plumbing water systems.

I still do not know well how the water hammer not importance in the wet sprinkler system. Example: when the clapper of the alarm valve close ( after full loading pressure water), it may be cause water hammer; when we shut on and shut of the jockey pump, the clapper will be opened and closed, it may cause damage too. I think the pressure chamber (big chamber, not chamber in alarm valve) use to balance the pressure of system???? Need some solution for water hammer in wet sprinkler system. At last, I’m very sorry for my poor English.

Water hammer can occur in any plumbing system. It requires a "fast" closing valve. When the valve closes, the momentum of the flowing water is stopped, resulting in a high (or higher) pressure wave/spike. Our office has tested this in 1/2" copper plumbing lines, where we found that water hammer from a solenoid valve can be matched by closing a ball valve. You will even see water hammer when filling a system and not bleeding the entrapped air. The real threat is in large systems with high volume flow that is stopped. The greater the mass of flowing water, the greater the water hammer effect.
