I am an architect and appreciate the information being shared here, very clear and helpful. We are working on an atrium and working in accordance the Closely-Spaced Sprinklers (for Atrium Enclosures).
In the details for the closely spaced sprinklers there is a horizontal distance of 4-12" from the glazing to the sprinkler - is there a separate vertical dimension that must be met? We have glass that is 11'-4" in an open/exposed ceiling that is 13'-5" high (at boundary of atrium). Posted anonymously for discussion. Discuss This | Submit Your Question | Subscribe

Is the intended use of the closely spaced sprinklers to provide glazing protection to achieve a fire rating? Can you reference what code and section the details you are looking at are from?

Hi, I am a MEP engineer. Appreciated if you could enlighten me if NFPA and FM Global asking for standby fire pump to be an engine-driven pump. From my reading of the standards, I couldn't find the statement. However, there are many senior staffs and clients keep telling me that if the fire protection system to comply with NFPA or FM Global, then an engine-driven pump is required for standby.

Not counting insurance requirements NFPA 20 talks about 2 different reasons to require a pump to have a secondary power source (day tank w/ refill contract, ATS and generator, etc.).

Tyco and Reliable have window sprinklers. It's best to check their data sheets.

the MFG requirements and the ES report cover both. Make sure you read both as they sometimes are on different revisions.
