The control valves on the backflow are typically the only control valves on a single riser system, unless that single riser supplies a multiple story building with floor control valves.

NFPA 13: (2016 ed ) 8.16.1.1.2.5 A listed backflow prevention assembly shall be permitted to be considered a control valve, provided both control valves are listed for fire protection system use and an additional control valve shall not be required.

Be sure the Water Department will allow you to 200 psi Hydrostatic Pressure test against that valve. For exemple St Petersburg Water dept Forbids pressure testing against The Backflow Valve.

Good point. I know as a company policy, we don't pressure test against any backflow (without closing the valves), and when flushing we either do it before the install of the DCVA or remove the internals when flushing.

I have employed this method in skidded fire pump assemblies (limited space inside) with no issues or AHJ objections.

Yes you can per NFPA 13, however be sure to check with local water department requirements and your AHJ. Sometimes they may or may not allow items like this. For instance in a previous jurisdiction I lived we were required to use RPZ backflows, and the water department required an independent monitored control valve downstream.

We always used what we called “ a frying pan “! Piece of sturdy metal, made with a “ handle” and bolt holes , tgat we’d drop between a pair of flanges for testing purposes . Whether a cut in, ( made with flanges to separate old from new) of bfp valve. Simple drop in and pull out .
