At what point does it become better to buy a plotter for the office? I'm a design outfit and only rarely send out drawings, but when I do they're pricey and I just bill it to the client out of a local print shop or the neighborhood Office Depot.
Any tips on what you made the decision to buy or not buy a plotter for your office, and any advice on models or brands to look into? Just curious, love the commentary on here and the wide range of opinions. Thanks in advance. Submitted anonymously and posted for discussion. Discuss This | Submit Your Question | Subscribe

I love having a plotter since I can mark up drawings and track my work. It really makes me more efficient and I catch my errors easier and listing is easier, too. I use a lot of highlighters.

Have used a HP500 in the past. It's a die hard and always keeps plugging, although not speedy.

In the past when I was shopping for large format printers there is a big range from a used one to top of the line $20-30k. To suit our purposes we chose HP2500. Check output levels vs what you actually need and include ink/toner replacement cost and availability to your decision.

I worked free-lance for nearly twenty years and out of my home for an additional ten. I had a plotter throughout that time - don't remember models - and I can't imagine not having my own plotter. Similar to Mike, I made liberal use of highlighters, and my plans got 'red-lined' long before any plan reviewer ever saw them. Good ones don't have to be expensive. If you need to deliver multiple copies of several sheets, there's always the local printing shop that you are already using.

Just my $0.02...sounds like a headache. Unless you are pretty IT savvy, it might end up taking more of your time (and money) than you think. I feel like if you are the type of person who needs to review in paper, then get one. Otherwise, I would just keep up your account with the local print shop and instead invest in a nice big 4K monitor. It is truly a game changer in terms of reviewing PDFs electronically.

I have been using the same HP450C plotter since I bought it in 1999. I ahd to replace a part in it last year, but nothing else needed any other repairs.
