I get asked by building owners somewhat frequently - what is the required clearance from a sprinkler?
I understand most typical ordinary storage/miscellaneous storage/office/standard spray sprinklers the clearance is 18-inches. I also understand ESFR requires 36-inch minimum. I'm trying to understand the big picture and not misspeak. What about other sprinklers, like CMDA, CMSA? Is there a rule of thumb across the board? Sent in anonymously for discussion. Reference 8.11 and 8.12 of NFPA 13, 2016. Informative diagrams there.

Typical clearances for sprinklers adjacent to obstructions across the board are located in Chapter 8 of the 2016 edition of NFPA 13. Chapter 8 also provides distances required from heat sources. Lastly, I would also advise to check manufacturer specific sprinkler cut sheets (i.e. attic sprinklers) to ensure proper locations from sprinkler discharge. Thorough understanding of that chapter is critical to proper operation and coverage of sprinklers.

36 inch minimum required from deflector to top of storage for CMDA heads. For example, Viking has data sheets, but refer you to NFPA 13 for spacing. This will give you base clearance as well as distance/ spacing from members and obstructions. And yes, it is always good to check data sheets first as they may have more restrictive requirements.

NFPA 13 Chapter 8 is where to start. But I always recommend to check each individual sprinkler device's listing. The listing will always be equal to or more stringent than NFPA 13.
