We are trying to confirm sprinkler design criteria for a liquor company that has alcohol in boxes and on pallets.
The liquor is 100-proof alcohol. Trucks come in and unload in one area, where these are stacked one-high. Then, they are moved to another area and loaded on a different truck. They are not there for a long period of time. NFPA 13-2013 calls this out as a Class IV for alcohol 100-proof or less. This project being under 12-foot high with high-temperature sprinklers, is the design criteria of 0.30 over 2,000 sqft acceptable? The AHJ uses the 2019 edition of NFPA 13 and we can't find anything in there or in NFPA 30 that is similar, unless I'm missing something. Sent in anonymously for discussion. You are in NFPA 30. You need to look into Water-Miscible Liquids and check out the the definitions there in note drinking alcohol is specifically ethyl alcohol or ethanol.

Since the protection of alcohols greater than 20 proof are outside the scope of NFPA 13 - 2019 edition, I would recommend looking at the FM Data Sheet for Distilleries. FM Data Sheet 7-74, page 4 has a table that shows design densities that FM Global recognizes as adequate for situations such as this. You could select one of the options from that table and pitch it to the AHJ as prima facie evidence of equivalency under Section 1.5.1 of NFPA 13 - 2019 edition and see if they accept that option. Just remember, if you select this option, the entire system will need to be designed to FM Standards, not NFPA 13 (can't mix and match standards).

You are outside the scope of NFPA 13 and into NFPA 30. There are several decision-trees in 30 that lead you to selecting a design scheme
