We have an open wood-truss concealed space above the highest ceiling and below the roof for a project that is getting sprinkler protection under NFPA 13.
The architect is proposing using spray foam closed-cell insulation to fill the entire concealed space. Does this qualify as non-combustible, such that filling the entire void would allow omission of sprinklers within this space? Posted anonymously for discussion. If the entire space is filled, there is no possibility anyway to provide a sprinkler protection inside :)

Depends on the flame spread rating.

I believe most foam sprays are E-84 which does not qualify as One-hour fire rating.

A one hour rating has no reflection on combustibility

You can look at NFPA 13 sec. 8.15.1.2.6 as a means to omit sprinkler coverage serving the structure. Refer to handbook for an illustration of the requirements that need to be met.

I've run into this question alot recently, architects are referring to using an intumescent and fire retardant coating. It's a paint-like coating that can be applied to structural steel, structural wood, and gypsum firewalls. It's intent is to reduce the rate of flame spread. I believe you can get it in white or clear, I would recommend white so that there is a visible indicator that it been applied. During high heat events the coating will expand and will look like it's charred. I would not believe this product can stay in place after it's exposed to a heat applied event and be reused, but I am unsure how post fire it would be removed unless it's scraped off. I would imagine if a fire's high heat was applied, the structural integrity would be in question and all would have to be replaced anyways. All the product information I've seen leads to it's use applying to satisfy NFPA 13 8.15.1.2.11.
