Residential single-family dwelling is getting an NFPA 13D sprinkler system with a pump and water storage tank.
Is the test line required to be routed to the exterior, or can it be run back to the water storage tank? I've seen it both ways but don't see an applicable code section. Posted anonymously by a member for discussion. Discuss this | Submit a Question | Subscribe

In NFPA 13D (at least the 2010 edition) under 7.2 Drains and Test Connections there doesn't appear to be anything that would prohibit routing the inspector's test connection back to the tank.

I think water reuse is a nice idea as long as it's not steel piping, which being 13D I'm assuming cpvc. Once again don't be afraid to call the AHJ on the gray areas since they are the final deciding factor. A maybe potential, that may be unlikely, could be debris from underground piping that's entered the system could enter the tank and cause a blockage. These are just thoughts since I don't deal with 13D much at all, I have a 13 project going on with a 30,000 gal underground water storage vault where we seem to be more concerned with keeping outside water out.

May I suggest that you install a sight glass. This way you can view the water flowing and possible debri that may entire the tank.
