I have a project that is under NFPA 13R (2019) and NFPA 14 (2019). In section 7.10.1.3.1.1 of NFPA 14, it states that in cases where NFPA 13R system demand is higher than the standpipe demand, the system demand applies.
Is it ever possible to have a residential sprinkler system with a higher demand than a standpipe? Sent in anonymously for discussion. Click Title to View | Submit Your Question | Subscribe

In some version of a building with a single exit stair (1 standpipe) or 2 stairs within 75' of each other (14-19' 7.3.2.5) and using some construction method of an attic (13-19' 7.4.3) that is outside a dwelling unit could push a flow requirement to be higher than 500 GPM. It would be far more the exception to come across something like this, but more plausible based on this section being a carryover from previous versions.

I have too - with an NFPA 13 system and a closet/electrical room within in a 1,500 sqft remote area - ending with a design flow over the 1,000 gpm required for the standpipes.
