Required Fire Hydrant Distance From Building?

We have an project serving the textile manufacturing industry. We are looking to install a fire hydrant (500 gpm minimum) in proximity to the building.

What is the minimum and maximum distance these hydrant(s) should be located from the building?

The project is not under IBC / IFC criteria, only subject to the NFPA series of standards.

I'd check NFPA 24 chapter 7.

Specifically section 7.2.

You're probably going to have to see what the AHJ is looking for in regards to new hydrants.

The distance is dictated by the local AHJ or responding department and will be in the local Fire Code amendments. The hydrant rules and provisions are modified per Chapter 7 of NFPA 24 if the hydrant is closer than 40' from the building.

Kind of depends. Commercial buildings with a standpipe, are required to have a hydrant within “100 feet of the fdc” unless AHJ approves it to exceed that distance, otherwise, IFC 507.5.1.1, Nfpa 14 6.4.5.4 is the same.
For residential, 1&2 family dwellings, NFPA 1 requires 600 ft max from the building and 800 ft max on center, between fire hydrants. 18.5.2.
18.5.4 chart, “ Maximum Fire Hydrant Flow Capacity, can be used to provide the minimum/ maximum flows at the required min/max distances.

NFPA 1 states a fire hydrant shall be a maximum 400' from the protected building and within 100' from a fire department connection as less otherwise permitted by the AHJ.

Hi Anonymous,

Late to the game here! I would reference the following (2) code sections below.

NFPA 24 (2016) 7.2.1 states that "hydrants shall be provided and spaced in accordance with the requirements of the AHJ".

NFPA 1 (2018) 18.5.3 which discusses fire hydrant locations for buildings other than detached one- and two-family dwellings.

Hydrants can be closer than 40 feet, if the surrounding areas is steep. Ensure that the hydrants are near roadways for the fire department to use.

I think it should not be more than 50m from the fire department connection (FDC).

Actually I didn't reply to your question but I have another question about Hydrant distance for Textile Mills (cotton godown) please help me in this condition (100ft 130ft or 200ft)
