I have a dining room in a clubhouse that has multiple ceiling pockets at different sizes that are 1-5" in depth.
The total cubic footage of these pockets is 1,165 cubic feet. Could I protect one of the pockets in this space to bring my total unprotected pockets under 1,000 cubic feet, and leave the rest of these pockets unprotected? The entire floor space in this area will be protected. Thanks in advance. Sent in anonymously for discussion. Click Title to View | Submit Your Question | Subscribe

Well, technically it would comply with 10.2.9.2(4), as written, for "The total size of all unprotected ceiling pockets in the same compartment within 10ft of each other does not exceed 1000ft³" and as long as the other 5 sections are complied with, I don't see an issue.

Adding on - Since the pocket depth is only 17 inches, you do not have obstructed construction.

Glenn - Ceiling pockets are architectural features and are unrelated to "obstructed construction" which is a structural feature.

I agree with Dan, though admittedly I've never tried this approach

Yes you can, I'd suggests you protect a central one. making sure the other pockets are separated by 10'-0. I'd add that you still need to make sure that you have the whole floor area covered.

Yes you can. I've done this many times before. You may get some kick back from architect/owner on the aesthetics, especially if not using concealed heads.

I've seen similar trickery done with closely-spaced skylights.

I agree that while it meets the letter of the standard. I am worried it misses the intent to limit multiple pockets building up.
