I have to do a sprinkler design for an MRI room and I need all the hangers and sway brace components to be non-ferrous material.
Where can I finds non-ferrous components for hangers and sway brace? Posted anonymously for discussion. Discuss This | Submit Your Question | Subscribe

I've never had to provide bracing in MRI rooms. Its typically only 4 to 6 sprinklers on a branch line. Using copper pipe we use mostly copper hangers and stainless steel attachments.

You need to verify the Shielded Perimeter. Usually the ceiling is part of this and anything above is not required to be non-ferrous. The detectors, sprinklers drops, and the sprinklers would be required to be non-ferrous in this situation.

Consider fiberglass elements. I was on a project where we built a roof top windscreen out of fiberglass since there was a communication antenna on top of the roof and metal would have affected the signal.

You can only use LISTED materials for fire protection.

So I have worked on three MRI rooms and have run into this everytime. There are no Nonmagnetic hanging materials. Even copper hangers, try putting a magnet up to them, it will stick. My last project I noticed all other trades were using magnetic materials to support their pipes and ducts. I asked the MRI rep if that was fine and their response was as long as it is securely attached it is fine. So what I ended up doing was using 1" Sammys (attached to the 2x2 wood below the shielding), stainless steel rod, and the copper swivel loop rings (even though they are magnetic maybe they are less magnetic than a traditional swivel ring?). It has been over a year and I have not heard about any hangers stuck to the MRI machine. Hope this helps because it burned hours of my time away. Document what the MRI sub says!

I recently did an MRI room and I used 304 Stainless Steel hangers in the room. 304 is austenitic, which is a phase of iron that is not magnetic. I had to do a lot of research to figure this out so I hope it helps!
