We have a project where the owner just wants to manually turn a switch to transfer from main power to backup power for a fire pump instead of having an Automatic Transfer Switch.
Wouldn't this be considered manual activation under NFPA 20, and not be allowed? I would think this arrangement isn't allowed because that's not automatic transfer. Thanks in advance for your input. Sent in anonymously for discussion. Click Title to View | Submit Your Question | Subscribe

No listed manual transfer switch, not automatic.

Interestingly, NFPA 20 has a definition for a Manual Transfer Switch (20-22' Ed)

This question is similar to one that I asked several months ago. The power to the fire pumps needs to be available at all times without manual intervention.

Section 10.8.1.2 is very clear that manual transfer to secondary power is not allowed. This has to be an automatic transfer switch.

I agree with the above and the NEC even has provisions that the power is taken ahead of the main switchgear for the building (if electric). As with other non-life safety systems operated manually, they seem to have all failed operations when needed, so why trust an important system? Call me a downer, but I've seen a lot of security systems fail due to lack of training, people turn-over, and minimum paid people put in charge in as short as 6 months.
