The University of Maryland is considering opening up an online, ABET-Accredited Bachelor of Science in Fire Protection Engineering program. This would be an online-only Bachelors program that would permit transfers-in only (core courses and labs would be completed prior).
I've ran into many people who do not yet have an ABET-Accredited Engineering degree who want to seek out PE licensure, and in order to do so they've asked and seek out other bachelors engineering programs (such as mechanical engineering) in order to meet that requirement. If you might be interested in attending a program like this, the university wants to hear from you specifically. (survey link: go.umd.edu/fpeonline) Do you see a need or an audience for something like this? Is this something that is needed for the industry? Sent in anonymously for discussion. I decided after 11 years of designing that I wanted to become a PE. Since my first undergrad degree wasn't in engineering, I had to seek out an ABET accredited online Mechanical Engineering degree. If an online bachelor's in FPE was available, it would have been my first choice.

Doesn't Eastern Kentucky University (EKU) offer an ABET Accredited FPE degree program online?

I could be wrong, but I believe it's an Engineering Technology program. Is ABET accredited, but some states won't accept Engineering Technology programs for PE licensure.

You are right James. I am currently a student at EKU in their online program. Here is the information on their website on the states of which the degree does and does not meet the requirements.

At this point in my career I've gone back and forth about whether I'd go back to school for this or an MBA or at all. I'm not sure that I personally would, but as I think we all can agree the construction industry as a whole is woefully short of FPEs in the right job roles. So many of us NICET etc folks are doing what really should be FPE work daily. I'd have a much bigger beef with the state of play if it weren't for the lack of availability of a simple path to going to a tailored for FPE degree rather than taking the mechanical route and then learning/testing for FPE either through an online masters or just a lot of training.
