Are ESFR heads provided below obstructions required to be calculated in addition to, in lieu of, or ignored when compared against the 12 (three rows of four sprinklers) included in the hydraulic calculations?
I haven't designed an ESFR system in ten years and it looks like the new verbiage seems to suggest that sprinklers below obstructions are not included in the calculations. Thanks in advance! Sent in anonymously for discussion. Discuss This | Submit Your Question | Subscribe

You are correct, but if AHJ is enforcing an older edition of NFPA13 the additional heads could still be required. Others might be able to tell you exactly when that changed, I can't recall off top of my head.

No they are not required to be included in the overhead calculations, however note that sprinklers installed under obstructions shall be of the same type (spray, CMSA, ESFR, residential) as installed at the ceiling except as permitted by 8.5.5.3.3.1.

Correct. They do not need to be included in the calculations. They need to be the same design approach though. I.E. ESFR, CMDA, etc.
