We have a medical marijuana facility with an extraction room that does not story any butane.
The room itself is 750 sqft, and it does not store flammable materials that are used for extraction within the same room. Those will be outside in a locked metal storage shed. Would the room remain an Ordinary Hazard Group II / Agricultural, or be considered Extra Hazard? Sent in anonymously for discussion. Click Title to View | Submit Your Question | Subscribe

Its not an issue of the storage per se, but rather the use. Storage would fall under NFPA 30 if over the MAQ. If butane is being used EH2 may govern.

This was my question actually. I have read as much code as i could find. I think you are correct. The use governs, regardless of materials stored. Some of the code does require materials to be stored in a separate area anyway. So the hazard classification will be Extra Hazard I'm afraid. The project was bid out as renovation only without any design. The hope was that the hazard would not change from OH-2 which was what the existing building was originally. Given the Extraction room and hazard class increase, design and calcs may be required by the AHJ.

Until NFPA 420 (Standard on Fire Protection of Cannabis Growing and Processing Facilities) is available, you can still have a look at:
