When testing our flow switch, the first time, it will take 25 seconds before the flow switch activates. When we reset and start over, it takes 5 seconds for the switch to activate.
After waiting an hour to test again, the first test always takes 25 seconds for the switch to activate. Any thoughts on why? This is running on an 8-inch pipe. The flow switch on all of the 6-inch pipes work properly. Thanks in advance. Sent in anonymously for discussion. Click Title to View | Submit Your Question | Subscribe

How long are you waiting to test again? 8" pipe would take a bit for the water to stop moving which seems likely based on the fact that

The statement about retting the system is somewhat questionable. A wet-pipe system doesn't require "resetting". The water in the piping system just needs to re-fill itself.

What does it matter if it's tripping early on the 2nd test? If water is flowing there is a problem, and the system is alerted in the appropriate amount of time. Under normal conditions you shouldn't have an alarm activation. So from a code perspective you're not in an impairment condition and the alarm does work.

All of the above are good comments. As Dan suggested I would pull cover and operate and see how long it takes to get back to normal. You may find it is returning enough to go off alarm but still in semi operated position and then when you flow the second time does not take as long for alarm. But given enough time it does get back to "normal" and then next quarterly test you are back to normal time. Could be something in pipe or could be something in switch or return spring. Could talk to Potter but if there is concern about false alarm after you do an inspection I would suggest replacing switch and if owner does not want to at least you are on record if they get charged for false alarm from the fire department.
