I am designing a two-story dormitory Type II-B (under 2018 IBC) with CMU walls throughout.
The floor deck consists of 5-inch composite metal deck. The corridor walls and walls between suites must be 1/2-hour (due to sprinkler exception - NFPA 13 fully sprinklered). There is also a horizontal separation between the two floors of 1/2-hour minimum. There are two stair towers which are required to be 1-hour fire rated. With the walls of the stair tower requiring a higher rating than is required between the two floors, is the floor then required to also be 1 hour? In other words, can the floor penetrating a shaft enclosure (the walls of the stair shaft will sit on the metal deck) be of a lesser rating than the actual stair enclosure walls? From what I've read regarding continuity, I'd say the floor rating would have to be 1 hour; but, I'm not clear. Please help. Sent in anonymously for discussion. No, the “supporting construction” (e.g. 0-hour floor construction) for 1-Hour Fire Barriers (1FB) protecting Interior Exit Stairways (IES) and 0.5-Hour Fire Partitions (0.5FP) protecting the dwelling units are not required to have an equivalent 0-5 or 1-Hour fire resistance rating (FRR) per 2018 IBC 707.5.1 EX 2 (for FBs) and 2018 IBC 708.4.1 EX (for FPs).

Thank you so much for clearing this up. I will go back and read the references you have included in your response.

The stair landings, if independent of the building structure does not require its own fire-rating.

Yes, if a rated Fire Barrier sits on a floor assembly then the floor assembly and supporting structural bay are required to have the matching rating. So if the CMU sits on the composite floor assembly, then the floor assembly and associated structural bay need to have a matching rating. See 2018 IBC 707.5.1. The only exception for not requiring supporting floor and structure is exception 2 for incidental use fire barriers in Type IIB, IIB and VB. The better option to have the CMU run continuously on the stair tower and not sit on the adjacent floor. You can chat with ICC about this, when I have, this is the opinion that I have be returned.
