Question for AHJs and inspectors:
Do you occasionally see fire alarm strobes mounted on the ceiling that appear to be for a wall-mounted orientation (e.g. they are rectangular and have the word "FIRE" on the side)? I know some of these are actually for ceiling mounted applications but I've run across some that are wall-mounted only. I think the Wheelock brand might be an example? Stuff like this is hard to tell in the field for an existing building (with no documented cut sheets for what was submitted). Anyone have tips or tricks for this? Posted anonymously for discussion. Look for the orientation of the lettering.

All of the major manufacturers today have separate models for ceiling or wall mounted strobes. Only much older devices had ones that could be mounted both on the ceiling or wall. The orientation of the lettering is a good indicator but not always the case. Wheelock, System Sensor, Gentex etc all had models that could be mounted either way and the lettering is all wrong. In that case the only way to know is to research the model number and find the cut sheet. The real question for me is “ Why is the strobe in that location now?” If it has always been there “What is the concern now?” If it was moved there during a remodel which I have seen more times than not, “Should the device be change?” That’s my advice. The fall back of course is-“When in doubt, change it out”.

The word FIRE must be legible from the floor in the position the appliance is supposed to be installed. If you look at Gentex GXS 120 series has both a ceiling and wall mounted type and the letter orientation changes.

See Sean’s comment. Then I’d move on. This issue is not worth getting a ladder to read model number of, noting brightness setting, area covered, then accessing online information or original plans to see if it’s 100%. 20 minutes down the drain.
