Without access to pricing differences, it can be difficult to make informed decisions when it comes to selecting fire pump controller starting methods. What is the magnitude of cost for each of the fire pump starting methods?
Specifically, I'm interested in Across-the-Line, Wye-Delta Open, Wye-Delta Closed, Soft-Starting and Variable Frequency Drives. Thanks in advance! Posted anonymously by a member for discussion. Discuss this | Subscribe

I'm not sure range of magnitudes because manufacturers are all different Generally, the more expensive have more electronics It's also important to check the voltage drop between each if an emergency generator is being used. I wanted to use a soft start because it was cheaper but it's voltage drop was too much for the emergency generator and had to go with the wye-delta after it was ordered and priced Luckily it wasn't fabricated yet.

VFD is the most expensive option with any manufacture. ACL is always the cheapest. I would think that wye-delta would be cheaper than soft start but that tech is getting cheaper all the time. Unless you have a incoming power line distance issue or a generator an ACL starter is all you need for most fire pump applications. Keep it simple.
