Allowed to Tap FDC Into Fire Pump Bypass?

Is there any reason in code (NFPA 13 or 20) that you cannot tie a Fire Department Connection (FDC) line to a pump bypass line as long as the FDC line is downstream of all control valves on the pump bypass?

Hi Anonymous,

Yes, you are allowed to tie your FDC off of your pump bypass, only if you are downstream of all required valves.

Do you have a DCVA or backflow preventor? If so, this will need to be installed prior to your pump. If you look at NFPA 20 Figure A.6.3.1(b), you will see you cannot tie into the pump bypass with the configuration shown. There was a Meyer Fire forum regarding backflow locations a few weeks back.

Also, when installing off of the bypass, make sure you still follow NFPA 13 Figure A.8.17.2(a). You need to have the dry section of pipe drain after use. Since your bypass will be high, you can drop against the wall, install your check, and raise to your FDC as shown in the figure.

By definition, if you tie in past your pump control valve and after the bypass check, you're on the system side of the pump.

Remember for high rise buildings you need an FDC on 2 sides of the building. per NFPA 14-16 7.12.2

Does your building have a single sprinkler riser or multiple risers? Or multiple standpipes and sprinkler risers?

See NFPA 13 for location of connection point.

No issue at all and done quite frequently. As long as it connects downstream of bypass check valve.

Yes you can as long as it downstream of the check valve along the bypass assembly.
