Air Compressors for FP Required to be Listed?

Are air compressors for dry fire sprinkler systems required to be listed?

Depends on the year of NFPA 13 referenced. In all cases, plant air/nitrogen is still a viable source and not required to be listed. Other NFPA's (like 14) are a little behind but will correlate with 13 eventually.

2019 & Earlier - No listing requirements for the air compressor (8.2.6.3), the AMD is required to be listed (8.2.6.6.1)
2022 - No listing requirements but the compressor must be installed per NEC 70 (8.2.6.6.4 - i.e. no plugs or light switch type "disconnect"). Nitrogen generator must be listed (8.2.6.9.2), AMD still required to be listed.
2025 (proposed) - When dedicated to the sprinkler system, the compressor shall be listed (8.2.7.5.2), NEC & AMD requirements still in effect.

No, as you can supply air or nitrogen from the plant process equipment.
But if not supplied from process (where you will have multiple information in case of problem and adequate maintenance), it is advisable to have listed air compressors as they are normally more reliable (I am not speaking of the company).

However, if you have a standalone tank or riser mount, please have it planed for in your construction documents. Have a junction box and have it hard wired in. Do not let someone just walk into the sprinkler room and unplug it because it's cycling too frequently.
