We have a remodel project with XL pipe and push fit fittings. When there is a leak in the fit fitting what product or method can be used to change the pipe to schedule 10 with grooved fittings? Can XL be grooved? Is a roustabout approved for XL? There is virtually no information on the internet regarding XL except for notable failures with the material. Thanks in advance. XL Can be grooved according to one guy on the eng-tips forum (and he seems to suggest it as he says threaded xl pipe has always caused problems). https://www.eng-tips.com/viewthread.cfm?qid=456367

I have a copy of the original tech data sheet for Allied XL - let me know how to send it to you.

Victaulic (and others) have "clamp-type" fittings that are perfect for your application.

I thought so too but Victaulic informed me it isn't listed for fire protection

In my experience (did a ton of service work replacing slip fittings & XL) you have to demo all the way back to the thread/groove connection. Once you put an in-air groover on the branch line and start moving things around up there you're going to cause leaks all over that branch line from those old slip fittings.

Can it be grooved, yes, slowly assuming the pipe isn't already egg'd. Is a Vic 99 (or similar) push fitting allowed, also yes with the right end prep on the pipe BUT Sch 5 pipe, pending size, does not carry the minimum 175PSI pressure rating for 2½" and larger pipe (for Vic 99 anyways) so double check the working pressure of the fitting planned to be used.

To reiterate what Dan said and emphasize SLOWLY. We have had nothing but trouble with XL

You way want to look at Viega MegaPRESS as they have variations of the fitting that are approved for fire sprinkler piping on SCH 5 to SCH40.

MegaPress (Steel), yes. Both UL & FM pending fitting type and size.

Are you sure it is XL pipe and not "poz-lock"? I would groove XL pipe without worry, but XL pipe was typically installed with threaded connections. But that poz-lock stuff was even thinner and used push together fittings, if it is that stuff you are SOL IMO. You'd have to demo back to the something you could groove or thread.
