I'm laying out heads on a project that has large ceiling clouds that do not meet the requirements for sprinkler omission. I do have heads in the lower ceilings. The clouds are within 18" of the deflector for the upper ceiling.
How do I space the sprinklers above the clouds since the spray pattern is disrupted? Many of the clouds are wider than my allowed max distance between heads. Anyone have any thoughts on this? Posted anonymously for discussion. Discuss This | Submit Your Question | Subscribe

I believe you may be over thinking this. Space the heads at the deck, to whatever coverage that is needed to protect the floor. That is where the obstruction of the cloud comes in... you will then put a head (or number required) to protect the area below that cloud; i.e. if the cloud is 10'x7', then one head is needed. If 20'x20', four heads will be needed. You basically treat it as another ceiling. There are no rules for coverage above the cloud, other than standard floor coverage.

I would also add to this that the sprinklers below the ceiling (obstruction) "..shall be of the same type as installed at the ceiling (exception being under overhead doors)."

Well summarized in previous comments.

if the new cloud rules don't permit sprinkler omission at the ceiling you provide sprinkler protection at the ceiling like normal as if the obstruction wasn't there. Then you add the heads in the cloud.
