We have a fire sprinkler tree system that has a 6" centerline down from a metal deck (mains and lines).
Since an air release valve is required at the end of the system, what are our options for installation? All the options I can find are too tall to fit with our piping so close to the deck. We are not able to lower the piping due to other trades. Thanks in advance. Sent in anonymously for discussion. Click Title to View | Submit Your Question | Subscribe

Are you required to have an automatic air vent or is this just trying to comply with the air vent requirement in general (manual)?

I totally agree with Dan here. Get an access panel if there is gyp ceiling.

I agree here also, adding only: You can cap your center-fed tree main with an inverted drain cap and run a 1" pipe to a control valve that is tied into your inspector's test line, upstream from the ITV. This way, when the system is filled, both valves can be opened from the ground to "burp" the system, bleeding air off of it.

The product that Pete placed in his response can be located at the end of a branch line. Thus might be your a suitable solution.

Agree with Dan. While there are a lot of fancy-ish commercially available air-vent devices out there, we usually just make our own.

Agree that a listed automatic air vent device is not required.

It should be noted that NFPA #13 say locate "near a high point" not the end of the system. I was speaking to one of the manufacturer's representatives whose opinion was that depending on system configuration, the greatest volume of air to be vented may not be the highest point at all. Anyway, if it is a manual venting system, make sure it is accessible, and it is my view that signage of map shall be provided at the riser of its existence and location.
