How do you see standpipes and hose valves protected from physical damage in parking garages where the area is large enough to require standpipes outside of the exit stairs? Bollards? Pipe guards? No protection?

I typically see steel posts or concrete bollards.

I let the GC know and hope that it was specifically excluded from our bid.

the International Fire Code has a standard accepted design for vehicle impact protection. It really shouldn't come to have structural design calculations.

NFPA 14 has a provision on the protection of exposed piping where there is a potential of mechanical damage. Steel posts or concrete barrieres can be provided to avoid such damages. On the other hand, approved means can also be accepted provided they are acceptable to the AHJ. I think any means of piping protection that does not interfere with the system operation and is acceptable to the local AHJ is consided as a good fit.
