This is the latest version of the tool, which is in beta testing until August 25, 2026. We'd love to hear any feedback you have, good or bad, by using the "Report a Bug" link on the right-hand side of this tool. To use the prior version of this tool, please click here.

Thrust Block Calculator sizes concrete thrust blocks for underground fire mains to NFPA 24 (2025).

Pick a block type:

  • Bearing block — for horizontal bends, tees, dead ends, and concave-up vertical bends, where thrust is resisted by bearing against undisturbed soil. Gives the required bearing area and block dimensions.
  • Gravity block — for concave-down vertical down-bends, where the block's own weight resists uplift. Gives the required block volume & weight, plus the horizontal bearing area.

Enter the pipe (ductile iron, PVC C900, or steel), diameter, bend angle, and pressure, then the soil type and safety factor. The tool computes the thrust and sizes the block per NFPA 24, showing every governing equation.
