For a wet sprinkler system in a single-story building with only one room, is it necessary to install a zone control valve?

No. The riser control valve can act as the control valve for a building that only has one system.

I've seen the backflow preventer act as the main control valve in situations like this. Add a flow switch and test and drain and you have a system.

Yes, There is a box shell site nearby my that have 5 buildings all controlled with a yard BFP and inside test/drain/gauge manifold.

A zone control valve would not be required for a single-space single-story facility. Quantifying my response - What is the floor area of the facility? There are limitations to the size of a sprinkler system zone stated in NFPA 13.

Not required if you have a a system control valve somewhere else in the incoming line that meets one of the NFPA 13/24 approved arrangements. But depending on where the main system control valve is located, a control valve in the riser room could be a huge help for annual testing, however you shouldn't make this call lightly. You can technically add as many monitored/secured control valves as you want. But is adding an additional control valve, for ease of maintenance/testing, worth the potential of having a closed valve during a fire event? Not good if there is a loss of life/property incident that is attributed to a closed valve that technically wasn't required in the first place. Not required. Zone control valve is require for 2 or more floor

No a single -zone sprinkler system does not as zone control valves are for multiple story buildings, more complex systems ( overhead and rack sprinklers) systems that exceed max areas, combo stand pipe and sprinkler systems, wet and antifreeze and more. Leave a Reply. |
