I'm trying to understand how (if) Section 7.2.3.8 of NFPA 13, 2016 Edition could be applied.
Dry pipe systems with water delivery times other than 7.2.3.2, 7.2.3.5, and 7.2.3.7 shall be acceptable where listed by a nationally recognized testing laboratory. When would this come into play? Sent in anonymously for discussion. Click Title to View | Submit Your Question | Subscribe

This clause is special system catch-all. I have not seen a condition when required yet.

I went down a rabbit hole looking for when and why this language was introduced (2002-2007 if you look at the ROP/ROC info on NFPA) and don't want to completely waste that time so 7.2.3.8 has an allowance specifically (and without favoring a specific manufacturer) alternate fire protection schemes for systems required to be calculated for delivery times...like a Quell system or Negative Pressure systems which incorporate their own calculation software (or a version of it specific to that technology).

Like mentioned above, it would apply when a system is over the max gallons allowed. You would need to run a delivery calculation to prove that it works in the times set by the table mentioned. There are two major companies that supply this service, besides learning the program and doing the calculations yourself.

The only example I can think of here is Tyco's Quell system
