I have a sprinkler system in a 75,000 sqft self-storage facility.
There are upright sprinklers that are within 2" of a vertical support Unistrut that is used to separate storage spaces. Would this be considered obstructed? What is the code-basis for evaluating a vertical obstruction like this?

Photo definitely shows an obstructed construction, but before making an opinion I need to know where the adjacent sprinklers are located.

I haven't run across this problem recently but I did NOT know that 10.2.7.2.2 rule was only for light hazard. As that is the case, what rule do we use for Ordinary Hazard with a partial height wall? Do you just consider them full height walls? There

That's been my issue with the rule as well. You could have a 3' high knee wall, and technically have to sprinkler on both sides of it in ordinary hazard. BUT, I've always interpreted it this way: You cannot use this rule if the vertical obstruction (wall) is within 18" of deflector. Otherwise, you would ignore it (light, ordinary, extra hazard, etc. regardless). I think it's definitely one of those times where you have to read in between the lines for the committees intent.

Obstructed cinstructiin, 3x rule, and it looks like they erroneously tried to throw on bith sides of the wall.

Also the post could be moved/ add another, but the spacing for throwing on each side of the wall is incorrect. ( and this is probably not a random occurance ),

The sprinkler head is directly over a wall that divides two 5x10 units. The unistrut is approximately the same size as the supply line. I ve spoken to two contractors personally that would not consider this obstructed, please, I need a specfic code with dimensions of obstruction. I value everyone's opinion. where is the 3x rule.

What code section are they using as an exception?

Most inspectors would call this obstructed. Is it going to work? Probably, but it clearly doesn't meet the "three times rule"

3 times rule. Whatever is the larger horizontal dimension of the vertical obstruction, multiple that by 3. That distance is how far away you need to be from it to "ignore" it in your layout for coverage. For extended coverage heads, it is 4 times.

Newer editions of 13 have OH floor mounted obstruction rules as well
