Do you have to protect the whole attic that has smoke partitions with fire sprinklers if only one area has gas-fueled equipment in it?

Which NFPA standard applies? 13D, 13R, and 13 all have different requirements. From the picture it looks like this could be a residential application.

13R says to provide at least one quick response sprinkler above the equipment. For the 2019 edition see sections 7.4.2 and 6.6.6.1. The intent of 13R is not to sprinkler the entire attic unless the building code requires otherwise.
