Do you specify single phase or 3-phase power for dry system air compressors?
If 3-phase, what horsepower? I've always gone with single phase but I had a sprinkler contractor tell me recently that they prefer 3-phase compressors because they fill the system better and last longer. I was curious what others would recommend as better practice. Sent in anonymously for discussion. Click Title to View | Submit Your Question | Subscribe

General Air is great. I think they are through Viking and will help you size the system based on its volume.

I agree with Alex. Sure, 3-phase is more efficient. But if the have the compressor sized correctly, its not doing a lot of work and single phase is sufficient.

A fire sprinkler system compressor should have a UL1450 listing.

Single phase when part of preaction systems and smaller dry-pipe systems. Three phase for larger dry-pipe systems.

Actually there are some considerations that you have to make when choosing a compressor, available Voltage, budget, system demand, product availability in your area. I agree on the comments above as long as compressor is size properly then you'll have no problem..

Typically, the total power requirement will drive 1 phase of 3 phase.

Above comments all provide good direction. I would add that if the correctly sized air compressor is a mid-sized model (1.5 or 2 hp) and you have the option of single phase or 3 phase I would go with 3 phase. It will be slightly more expensive for the electrician to run power, but compressor motor should last longer and be less likely to overheat.
