Space Sprinkler to Front or Back of Cabinets?

There is a great debate in my office whether or not we are required to protect to the back of lower/upper cabinets.

NFPA 13 9.2.9.3 (2022) states that we need to cover the area below the cabinets to the back wall. Seems pretty straightforward to me, but someone in my office states that we only sprinkler floor space, without providing any code reference.

Do we protect to the wall, or the face of the cabinet where only floor area is exposed?

I would refer to 9.5.1.3 as to intent of where sprinkler protection is measured from.

9.5.3.2 states distance measurements from "Walls".
9.5.3.2.3 indicates measurements from .."walls behind furniture..."
A.9.5.3.2.3 - Furniture includes such items as portable wardrobe units, lockers, cabinets, and trophy cases.

Now, there is 9.5.3.2.4 but this is specific to windows that create no additional floor area. Cabinets (furniture) sit within a floor area so they would not be the new measurement point unless they are set

The distance from the sprinkler to a wall is always measured to the inside surface of the wall. Where sprinklers have been omitted and 9.5.3.2.3 applies to the situation where shelving, cabinets, or trophy cases are installed on a wall, the measurement is not to the front of the case or shelf but back to the surface of the wall.

As this is Chapter 9 verbiage, this would apply to all other chapters for sprinkler spacing and is not limited to any specific sprinkler type (SC/SC/Res/CMSA/ESFR).

Got submit happy...

...unless they are set..within a wall cavity (not put into a drywall framed alcove) however most of my AHJ's would require sprinkler protection based on the distance to the back of the case.

They don't build them like this much anymore, but it's still out there.

Agree with Dan.

I treat cabinets like soffits and use those rules.
