Smoke Detector for Recall Required at Awning?

We are installing an elevator (freight) at an advanced water treatment plant. The doors open at two locations:
  1. the basement of the facility where pumps and piping are located, and
  2. to the building exterior with only a small canopy/awning protecting the entrance.

A smoke detector is located near the elevator in the basement; however, is a smoke detector required under this canopy/awning?

In your case, a 190'f Heat Detector is usually called out for Elevator Capture.

In the states I work in smokes are only required if the elevator is rated for passengers. Freight only no smokes/recall etc. but if a landing for passengers is outside, you’d need a heat, not a smoke.

Not sure what the awning in question looks like or where you are located, smoke detectors may not be appropriate for your project. For outdoor locations, some AHJs will not require a detector to be placed.

Hi,

This is not my area of expertise. I was able to find to find this article on recalling outdoor elevators. It doesn't address if a detector is required or not, but the location of a detector if no awning is present.

Sorry not much help here. I couldn't find much in 72 or IBC/IFC.

10.3.5
Equipment shall be designed so that it is capable of performing its intended functions under the following conditions:
(1)*At 85 percent and at 110 percent of the nameplate primary (main) and secondary (standby) input voltage(s)
(2)At ambient temperatures of 0°C (32°F) and 49°C (120°F)
(3)At a relative humidity of 85 percent and an ambient temperature of 30°C (86°F)

17.7.1.8*
Unless specifically designed and listed for the expected conditions, smoke detectors shall not be installed if any of the following ambient conditions exist:
(1)Temperature below 32°F (0°C)
(2)Temperature above 100°F (38°C)
(3)Relative humidity above 93 percent
(4)Air velocity greater than 300 ft/min (1.5 m/sec)

21.3.5*
A lobby smoke detector shall be located on the ceiling within 21 ft (6.4 m) of the centerline of each elevator door within the elevator bank under control of the detector.
Exception: For lobby ceiling configurations exceeding 15 ft (4.6 m) in height or that are other than flat and smooth, detector locations shall be determined in accordance with Chapter 17.

A.21.3.5
Smoke detectors should not be installed in outdoor locations or locations that are open to the weather (such as unenclosed elevator lobbies in open parking structures), because such environments can exceed the parameters of the detector listing and can result in unwanted alarms. (See 21.3.9.)

21.3.9*
If ambient conditions prohibit installation of automatic smoke detection used to initiate elevator Phase I Emergency Recall Operation, other automatic fire detection initiating devices shall be permitted.
