Sensing & Air Lines Need Be "Listed for FP?"

In order to use pipe and fittings, they need to be "listed for fire protection service."

Do fire pump sensing lines need to meet this listing?

What about compressed air lines coming from the air compressor to the air maintenance device, do they need to meet this listing?

What about air on the downstream side of the maintenance device?

We're curious on different methods to install these components where some fittings & pipe combinations are listed and some aren't (such as copper pro-press for sensing lines).

Good question.

Since these pipes / connections are very small bore in size, I would say that they do not need to be listed for fire protection use.

Viega ProPress carries the FM1920 Approval which is for Pipe Couplings and Fittings for Above Ground Fire Protection Systems but you'll have to use B-88 copper tube. The fittings approved are detailed in the approval guide (2915 Coupling, 2916 Ell, 2926 45 Ell, 2918 Tee...)

As to air lines...more of a grey area.

Chapter 7 - 7.1.1.2 - Unless the requirements of 7.1.1.3, 7.1.1.4, or 7.1.1.5 are met, all materials and devices essential to successful system operation shall be listed.

Chapter 7.10 Air Supplies only states the compressor shall be listed. (2025 Edition, this is new)

IMO - Air lines prior to the AMD. - No these do not carry a requirement because these can be supplied by plant air and there is no separation in listing/approval requirements in that case (the way I read it). Yes, a dedicated air compressor is required to be listed per 8.2.7.5.2.

The AMD - Yes per 8.2.8.1

Once you reach the start of listed scope for fire protection, my opinion is that the rest should also be listed/approved (with the noted exceptions of valve trim, drains, and some other items).

N2 generators are required to be listed when taking the C Factor allowance (8.2.10.1) unless it comes from the plant or tanks (8.2.7.6.1), but it does not state they are to be listed specifically for fire protection. Same with the newer Vapor Corrosion Inhibitors (8.2.11) and Vacuum Systems (8.11.1.1).

List for FP use - no. Pipe doesn't need to be specifically listed for FP it needs to be in compliance with Table 7.3.1.1 Pipe or Tube Materials and Dimensions (NFAP 13-22)

Sensing lines - yes. They connect to the pump and controller and need to be rated for the pressures they're experiencing.

Air lines up to the maintaining device - no.

As a reviewing engineer I've approved pro-press in cases where the pump churn+city pressure are below the pro-press rating. In these cases. You have to be very litigious in tracking both the submittal and the actual pipe in field, not all pres piping is rated the same.

A lot of contractors I see like to use copper on Pump Sensing lines. Since this equipment is in a Pump room (OH occupancy) this stuff needs to be brazed and not soldered. I don't think I've ever seen this stuff brazed.
