Is there a standard spacing for private fire hydrants?
No applicable code for this project, but looking for guidance in what would be common under NFPA 24, NFPA 1 / 101, and/or the IBC. Thanks in advance. Submitted anonymously and posted for discussion. Discuss This | Submit Your Question | Subscribe

No more than 600 ft. Most fire apparatus carry 800 ft LDH. Should also check with the AHJ about connections. They may also provide spacing guidelines.

NFPA 101 does not contain any requirements for hydrants. Since you state no codes are applicable, I would say you have a choice of IFC or NFPA 1. I would look at Chapter 18 of NFPA 1 or Chapter 5 and Appendix B in the IFC. Outside of that, you may also want to consult with the property insurer to see if there are any requirements they may have that exceed minimum code. Also consult with the local FD to assess their capabilities and if going above minimum requirements would better accommodate their ability to address this facility you are dealing. Regardless of which code you use, you might need to assess the required fire flow (RFF).

In line with IFC, Fire hydrants should be spaced at a maximum of 90 meters (300 feet) from each other along the travel path of the adjoining roadway available for use by fire apparatus. A fire hydrant capable of meeting the system demand must be located within 30 meters (100 feet) of any required fire department connection installed in a new building.

The spacing/location of the fire hydrants would depend on the fire-flow requirement and number of hydrants required. See Appendix C sections C102, C103, and C105 of the 2012 International Fire Code.
