"Pipe Schedule System" OK on Hydraulic Placard?

A number of board and care facilities have​ missing hydraulic placards. It's possible they never had them since the sprinkler system was installed before placards were required.

They are now required, and I
wonder if it would be a viable option to survey the system, get pipe diameters and sprinkler counts, and see if they fit within the criteria of the pipe schedule method?

If it does, would there be any issues stating so on the hydraulic placard?

The board and care facilities range from 3 - 16 bedrooms and no more than 2 stories high.

Check with your AHJ, as this ultimately comes down to enforcement: but if the system is old enough that it was originally designed a s a pipe schedule system and is not being modified sufficiently to require a calculation... what else would you write? It's the truth.

Me specifically, I don't think I'd be worried about a pipe schedule design in a board and care occupancy. But I also could see an AHJ knowing that isn't really a worry and telling an owner to pay someone to run a calculation on it.

In my opinion: a phone call or an e-mail to your local FM can narrow this down for your jurisdiction probably faster than anything else.

There are a whole lot of companies compelling owners to get a re-calc on systems with missing placards and no records available. Its a fail and they wont ignore it... AHJ/FM be damned. They have all caught on so vendor shopping does not help Its a racket but its technically correct.

In this case, without knowing whether it's a pipe schedule design or by hydraulic calculation, if through a survey you determine it fits the pipe schedule method, would it be within reason to assume the system was a pipe schedule system and put up a "pipe schedule" placard?

From NFPA #25 2017 Edition"

5.2.5* Hydraulic Design Information Sign. The hydraulic design information sign shall be inspected annually to verify that it is provided, attached securely to the sprinkler riser, and is legible.
5.2.5.1 A hydraulic design information sign that is missing or illegible shall be replaced.
5.2.5.2 A pipe schedule system shall have a hydraulic design information sign that reads “Pipe Schedule System.”

Looks to me all we need is a sign that says "Pipe Schedule System" and be done with it.

You would think that someone would make one.

I work for a State Agency that manages a number of Residential Board and Care homes. To address the placard issue back in 2010 we provided a Placard which stated Design Type "Pipe Schedule System" with Design date. I do have a Sign Template.

Recommend performing a records request to find original drawing to confirm the system is a pipe schedule system. When confirmed install a new sign.

NFPA 13, 2022 Edition, 29.5.1 The installing contractor shall identify a pipe schedule sprinkler system with a permanently marked weatherproof metal or rigid plastic sign secured with corrosion resistant wire, chain, or other approved means.

In the 2025 version of NFPA 13 - This requirement is covered in Chapter 29.5.

Yes, it is OK to put it on a Hydraulic Placard however, without the original plans, there are several hydraulically calculated systems that look like the pipe schedule system simply because the designers defaulted to the threaded reductions out of habit.

I would look for larger diameter threaded reducing tees and crosses, a lot of ½" outlets and no bushings, flanged risers, and the odd sized piping like 3½" & 5", and beyond maybe at the riser or a noticeable new pipe, no couplings....all of which generally went away with hydraulic systems and are good indicators of an original pipe schedule system.

One of the first things I teach young designers is how to recognize a pipe-schedule system. While its not a method we use anymore, there are a lot of pipe-schedule systems out there.

I generally document the riser placard as LHPS or OHPS identifying Light Hazard or Ordinary Hazard Pipe-Schedule.

As a former AHJ, I expected the system be properly identified. If there have been no changes (building additions) to an older pipe schedule system, then that is all that is necessary. Great references given in the comments section. This is a good opportunity to promote keeping the as-builts...

Pipe schedule systems are grandfathered and unless the occupancy has changed , there is no need to “ calculate it “.
In the 50 s, 60 s, 70 s we were putting design placards on pipe schedule systems ( required).
For a pipe schedule system you would look at the design charts.
Usually at the bottom of the chart it would read something like 250 gpm at 15 psi at the height of the highest sprinkler, then write in pipe schedule design.
I d look in the edition relevant to the date of the systems original install.

And with quarterly, and annual inspections using the pipe schedule minimums it is easy to determine a flow/ pressure probably.

Are there as-built sprinkler documents available. The AHJ should have them as part of the building history records as required here in NYS.
