NFPA 101, Sec 12.3.2.1.1, specifically allows the use of fire barriers in lieu of sprinklers when protecting mechanical rooms that contain equipment subject to explosion.

I agree! Although I believe this to be one of their popular "trick questions" on the NICET test; since it did not specify the wall type or thickness of the mechanical room. possibly?

This is a requirement for New Assembly Occupancies and is not applicable here.
