Existing remote church with water provided by a storage tank. The church plans on building a separate meeting hall that does not connect to the church. These buildings will be approximately 200 feet apart. This new building will require sprinkler protection.
Is it possible to use the existing storage tank to serve both buildings? The current tank is sized just for one fire area, so it is not for two simultaneous fires. Normally, two separate buildings have two services, but I wonder if there is an exception for storage tanks in remote areas. Sent in anonymously for discussion. Yes, this is fine as long as the tank is sized adequately for the new building. There is no problem with one water tank serving multiple buildings, in fact... this is exactly what happens in most cases. We are in the midst of a project to connect several new buildings to an existing storage tank.

Unless your AHJ has an amendment, there should be no issue provided the tank is sized correctly for the new building demand as long as it's only supplying sprinkler systems. If the tank is supplying hydrants, then fire flow is (likely) the driving factor for sizing.

I don't see an issue with it as long as the tank is sized to meet the AS demand of the new building and the fire flow requirement for the existing building.

Great answers all around. This is a similar idea I'm doing for multiple buildings making the tank able to handle the worst-case flow.

If sufficient FW storage replenishment to the required demand volume within the 8 hrs per NFPA 22 (2018) Section 4.2.1.4 is NOT available, appropriate upsizing of water storage volume may be necessary...up to- and including doubling based on worst-case demand and duration to which the supply provides. Depending on the jurisdiction, supplimental hose streams may be excluded from this volume requirement. Suggest consideration of this and verification with local municipality/amendments at the early phase of any system expansion consideration.
