Suppose you have a small enough elevator lobby with hold-open doors.
Could you use one detector to activate both recall and door closing, so long as you comply with the spacing requirements for both the doors (based on ceilings) and distance to the elevator(s)? I don't see why you couldn't if you have an intelligent system that could achieve this through programming, and I don't see anything in NFPA 72 that would prohibit this either. Yes - You can use one smoke detector to activate both elevator recall and door closure IF YOU CAN COMPLY with the spacing requirements for both items.

In my latest experience with elevators and smokes, the state elevator inspector required one for each elevator in addition to the 2 that were already within 5 feet of the doors on the top (5-story R-2) floor. That said, you may have other requirements besides what is in NFPA 72 and 101.

Agree with Danial , the state elevator inspector usually has their own requirement and may not accept the NFPA requirement.

Notification power supplies typically have a door holder setting that is selectable with a DIP switch. It is my understanding that door holder power can be interrupted on the general alarm, and that configuration would allow the function of elevator lobby smoke(s) to be specific to the recall operation. This may be an alternative to grouping the 2 functions to one initiating device.

I think you would require smoke detectors in each lobby to recall the elevator to specific and alternate levels.
