I have alcoves in a corridor that has a lower ceiling height than the rest of the corridor. The lower ceiling is 36-inches lower than the higher ceiling.
The alcoves are sprinklered, but not the higher ceiling in the corridor directly adjacent to the alcove. The rest of the corridor is sprinklered, spaced off the sprinkler in the alcove. Can sprinklers be omitted at the higher ceiling? Sent in anonymously for discussion. Click Title to View | Submit Your Question | Subscribe

This depends on the size of the alcove. I would say this falls under an unprotected ceiling pocket. The maximum depth of the ceiling pocket cannot exceed 36", so you are good there. The issue you will have is that it cannot exceed 1000 cubic feet in a compartment. If the alcove is on both sides of the corridor, you will quickly exceed the 1000 cubic feet limit.

Need dimensions and use of the alcoves to determine the sprinkler requirement for them.

So are the corridor sprinklers spaced without regard to the alcove sprinklers? So basically, are the heads in the corridor spaced as if the alcove didn't exist? If so, no issue. If you are trying to use the lower sprinklers to supplement coverage in the corridor as well, then this is fine as long as the alcove sprinklers (at the lower elevation) are not more than 36" different in elevation to the higher ceiling. From memory, this is measured from the deflector of the lower sprinkler deflector to the higher ceiling, so technically you may have 36-1/2" of difference from the way you explained the situation. But the short answer is yes, they can help cover floor space if all conditions of NFPA 13 are met.

More information is required to answer your question. But to give you a starting point, there’s several NFPA 13 sections to explore (assuming you are using 2016 NFPA 13, room is unobstructed construction, and these are standard spray sprinklers).
