An existing building needs to replace its fire alarm system because the current system cannot support elevator recall, which is required for the new elevator they need to install. In Massachusetts, the IEBC states that when a fire alarm system is replaced, heat detectors will be installed if the building is not fully sprinklered. Should the building include providing low-frequency sounders inside the units to ensure adequate audibility at the pillow? I have heard mixed interpretations from other AHJs. Why not add a designated fire alarm system only for elevator recall. This way the panel may be located in the elevator machine room with an optional remote annunciator if required. This panel can be monitored by the existing fire alarm panel for alarm, trouble and supervisory conditions. This panel will not require any manual pull stations or notification appliances, only the required detection for initiating elevator recall and associated operations.

Strictly speaking no, that amendment is not above compelling upgrades to Low Frequency for a panel swap. Even in Boston they aren't asking for that when you need to add recall.

A conversation with the AHJ is needed. But present only the minimal and how you plan to proceed. Never ask them what they want as they will ask for the Platinum system when the Bamboo type will do. Present 2 options and explain the one you prefer and why. Back it up with code references. Leave a Reply. |
