We're designing a Wet Manual Class I standpipe in a low-rise building with 4 stairs/standpipes and therefore 4 isolation valves. There are 7 total levels of this building.
The horizontal supply pipe must be located in the level 5 ceiling. Is it allowable to locate the standpipe isolation valves at this 5th level versus the more typical location near the bottom of each standpipe? Sent in anonymously for discussion. NFPA 14 (2013) 6.3.2 states that valves shall be provided on all standpipes to allow for isolation of a standpipe without interrupting the supply to other standpipes from the same source of supply.

The only issue I would see is accessibility. The isolation valves must be accessible to trained personnel during an emergency situation. If it is readily accessible, I wouldn't see an issue.

Totally allowable, do it all the time.

May be unusual, but not specifically prohibited.
