Looking at storing upwards of 100 skids of isopropyl alcohol in consumer commodity bottles and in cartons. These would be in 475 mL and 950 mL bottles. The building is not a dangerous goods warehouse.
Is this permissible? Thanks in advance. Sent in anonymously for discussion. Click Title to View | Submit Your Question | Subscribe

Does the building have sprinkler coverage or other fire protection for that commodity in the code which it was built under?

Isopropyl alcohol is classified as a Class 1B flammable liquid due to its low Flashpoint (-53 F).

Unfortunately, this is too general of a question to answer and would require detailed knowledge of the existing building and a thorough code analysis to determine if this storage would trigger a change in occupancy to a hazardous occupancy. There is also the question of if the building's sprinkler system is designed for storage of flammable liquids.

Would need to know what Building/Fire Code is applicable and total quantity of the product being stored.

There is an option to create Control Areas and separate the materials if greater than the MAQ. You can create 4 Control Areas on the Ground Floor and less Control Areas and quantity of IPA as you ascend or descend in the building. The Control Areas are required to be separated by 1-hour rated construction. If you are above the Ground Floor you may have to rate the floor slab for 2-hoiurs depending on the building and other conditions related to the building and the Control Areas.
