One of our projects has standard-spray upright sprinklers used in a place where cable tray is above the sprinkler deflector. The roof is non-combustible, and the deflectors are about 8.7-inches below the roof. The cable tray and cables are about 4-inches above the deflector.

No obstruction issue here since the tray is above the sprinkler deflector. There are a few exceptions, such as HSW sprinklers, but you specified that uprights are being used.

If it was an old style sprinkler used before 1953 then it would possibly be a problem because their spray pattern was significantly different. Standard spray sprinklers introduced after 53' produced a different design that did not spray water up as high to the like an old style sprinkler did. Currently upright sprinklers require a minimum of the 1" below the deck/obstruction. Part of the reason is that there is a slight upward curve of spray in the sprinkler past the deflector to help generate the umbrella pattern but it is very minimal. This is the same for pendents and more so for horizontal sidewalls. As long as the deflector of your upright style sprinkler meets the obstruction rule locations of 13 and manufacturer installation rules there is no issue.

Agree with the first two posts. Should be no issue. As far as the 1" deflector distance, I always thought it was more of a practical rule to allow the installation and/or replacement of the head in the future. I know the obstruction rules don't mention anything above the deflector and they are based at the deflector being at the same height as the deflector for the starting point. So theoretically you could have the cable tray just to the side of the sprinkler with the bottom even with the head with no issues (from my understanding).
