For straight pipe couplings, are thrust blocks required, or is it only at any change of direction in the piping? It seems as though restrained joints seem to be common now, but the question came up when using thrust blocks instead of the restrained joints.

See below from NFPA 13, 2013 Edition. I am not aware of a requirement for thrust blocks on straight-through runs of underground pipe or if additional considerations should be made for very old underground pipe.

it has to have the proper base but no thrust as no change in flow dynamics will occure
