Is it mandatory to install a strainer at the suction pipe of a fire pump?
Or are there specific criteria in NFPA for horizontal centrifugal pumps to determine under what circumstances a strainer may not be required at the suction pipe? Sent in anonymously for discussion. Click Title to View | Submit Your Question | Subscribe

Not a requirement unless there is a water supply issue.

They're not required on horizontal pumps, they're allowed. vertical suction pumps will have it required. I think they're also required for all 'raw water source'

In a quick review of the 2025 NFPA 20 I did not see a requirement that a strainer SHALL BE REQUIRED for a horizontal centrifugal pump. It does say it shall be permitted. NFPA 20 does state for several other types of fire pumps that the strainer is required.

This is what I found when I looked through the code this morning on this one. I saw no specific requirement for a horizontal centrifugal pump despite seeing a specific requirement in other types of pumps.

Not required for hdorizontal centrifugal pumps, but may be allowed if needed. Certainly for a vertical turbine pump pulling from a pond so you dodn't ingest turtles and other stuff. That'll wreck your day

It's a choice not a requirement. However when there are foreign elements in water like if lifting water from an open source like pond, lake, water streams etc it seems to be a requirement so as to avoid pump damage. If working on municipal water strainer is not required as there is no such problem of foreign elements in water normally exist.
