Intrinsically Safe Pneumatic Mixer in Paint Booth?

For a Paint Booth, mixing paint is taking place inside the space (1 gallon), and all applicable code items are in place, such as ventilation and sprinkler system (etc.).

If the mixer is pneumatic, is it required to be intrinsically safe?

Looking for code or standard reference guidance either way. Thanks in advance!

If it’s in the class I or II zone, yes anything Electrical needs to be. See NPFA 33 for diagrams of the zones/areas.

Check with the specific mfg/model, but I believe they are intrinsically safe, just by design.

All processes and equipment located within a classified space must be rated for that space.

Since you mentioned 1 gallon paint being mixed - Do you have a manufactured paint booth / hood? Or do you have a capture ventilation hood assembly?

Need more info.
Does the spray booth ( construction) meet the requirements of nfpa 33, and 29 CFR 1910 ?
Were the requirements for electrical , ventilation and Fire Protection met ?
If not should it meet a violation requirement for non compliance?
Which type of paint mixer? Can shaker? Bucket mixer ( like a kitchen mixer)?
Since the machines are open , if in a separate -----closet or room, -----the space must be included and requires fire sprinklers or dry chemical protection.

The purpose of using an IS safe paint mixer thee , the purpose is to lower the electrical and thermal energy of devices to the point where it’s impossible to generate a spark.
They use zener diodes to limit voltage and resistors to limit current and fuses to shut down the electrical supply.
( there is a difference between intrinsically safety, and explosion proof )

I second that.

The mixer needs to be rated for installation in the particular type of hazardous area where it will be used. (ie. combustible fumes, combustible dusts etc.) through its de6sign (spark resistant construction, non-sparking pneumatic drive etc.) and any related electrical safety or interlock devices and wiring need to be either rated as intrinsically or housed in explosion resistant enclosures. It's not enough to just be a pneumatic mixer. It must be NEMA rated.
